Tantō-Jutsu Ippon-Kumite

短刀術 一本 組手

Tanto-Jutsu (or 短刀術 in Japanese) includes the fighting techniques ( 術 Jutsu) with a short sword ( 短刀 Tantō). The Tanto (literally meaning ‘short blade’) is a traditionally made Japanese knife with a the blade length up to 30 cm (11.6 inches). Next, Ippon-Kumite (or 一本 組手 in Japanese) means ‘one step sparring’. Typically, this involves a standard way of responding to a single attack technique. In the video embedded below (recorded on 30 December 2024), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national champion from the Netherlands, performs the eleven basic one-step-sparring sequences for the Tanto, developed as part of the Shin Hanbo Jutsu curriculum by Wim van de Leur (1944), Shihan, also from the Netherlands.
