Shuji no Hanbo Sho

周氏の半棒小

Shuji no Hanbo Sho (or 周氏の半棒小 in Japanese) is the preformance of the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Kata of Shuji no Kon Sho with the Hanbo (or 半棒 in Japanese) instead of the Bo (or Kon). In the video embedded below (recorded on 11 November 2024), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national champion from the Netherlands, performs this ‘small version Mr. Shū’s Bo Kata’ with the Hanbo.

In the next video (also recorded on 11 November 2024), budoka Johan Oldenkamp performs the Bunkai of this Hanbo Kata. Bunkai (or 分解 in Japanese) literally means ‘analysis’ or ‘disassembly’. In this Bunkai, this Kata of Shuji no Hanbo Sho is broken down and studied for its offensive and defensive elements in four practical applications.
