Hamahiga no Sai

浜比嘉の釵

Hamahiga no Sai (or 浜比嘉の釵 in Japanese) is a Ryukyu Kobujutsu Sai Kata. The first part of its name – Hamahiga (or 浜比嘉 in Japanese) – refers to an island located in the Yokatsu Islands of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, near the Katsuren Peninsula, where allegedly the origin of this Sai ( 釵 ) Kata lies. In the video embedded below (recorded on 25 March 2024), budoka Johan Oldenkamp, a former national champion from the Netherlands, performs this ‘Sai Kata from the Hamahiga Island’.
